About

What is Cloudflare?

Cloudflare runs one of the largest reverse proxy networks on the internet. Sites put it in front of their servers for caching, DDoS protection, a web application firewall and TLS.

Visitors connect to Cloudflare's addresses, not to the origin server, so a lookup of a site behind Cloudflare shows Cloudflare and hides the real host. Many sites also use Cloudflare only for DNS, which shows in their nameservers.

Detection

How to tell a site uses Cloudflare

A hosting check compares a site's DNS records, IP address and response headers with these signals. When several providers match, the one with the most matches wins.

  • Networks (ASN)

IP addresses announced by these autonomous systems belong to Cloudflare.

    • AS13335
    • AS209242
  • IP ranges

Cloudflare uses too many ranges to list here, and they change over time.

  • CNAME and reverse DNS

A CNAME record or a reverse DNS name under one of these hosts points at Cloudflare.

    • *.cdn.cloudflare.net
  • Response headers

Cloudflare adds these headers to the responses it serves.

    • cf-ray
    • server: cloudflare
  • Nameservers

A domain whose NS records point here uses Cloudflare for DNS, wherever the site runs.
