Understanding WHOIS & RDAP
WHOIS records show who is responsible for a domain name or an IP address block. They are the first place to check when you want to know a domain's age, when it expires, which registrar manages it, or where to report abuse.
Domain records are kept by the registry of each top-level domain, such as Verisign for .com. IP address records are kept by the five Regional Internet Registries: ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, AFRINIC and LACNIC. Generic TLD registries and the five RIRs publish their data over RDAP, which returns structured JSON instead of free-form text. Many country-code registries still run only the older WHOIS protocol.
